ICMS Mathematics for Humanity · Arba Minch University

The next landslide is a maths problem.

Before our two-week research school, we're opening three questions to the community. Post your best idea, discuss others' proposals, and back the ones worth developing. We invite the top three to present at Arba Minch.

02 Discuss and upvote

Reply to others, reply to those replies, and back the ideas you'd most want built.

03 Top three present

We invite the three highest-backed ideas to share at the research school.

QUESTION 1

Doing more with less data

Landslide models built for the Alps or the Himalayas assume dense sensor networks and long records. Southern Ethiopia has sparse gauges, incomplete inventories, and patchy terrain data. How can mathematical and statistical methods produce reliable risk estimates from scarce, incomplete, or low-quality data ù and honestly quantify the added uncertainty?
